In Bicol, the military is ramping up its internal security operations to ensure tranquility in the region, particularly as the election season approaches. Maj. Frank Roldan, spokesperson for the 9th Infantry Division (9ID), emphasized in a recent interview that their primary focus is on counter-insurgency and assisting law enforcement. Additionally, Roldan highlighted the division’s community engagement initiatives, which are particularly active in the more isolated parts of the region.
Maj. Gen. Noe Alberto Peñafiel, the commander of the 9ID, has reaffirmed his commitment to ongoing counter-insurgency operations to secure peaceful elections in May. This commitment was further solidified following a visit by Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. to the 9ID headquarters in Pili, Camarines Sur, and to the 2nd and 96th Infantry Battalions in Masbate province.
Peñafiel expressed gratitude for Brawner’s visit, noting that it significantly uplifted the spirits of the soldiers. He acknowledged the visit as a recognition of the troops’ dedication and sacrifices, especially during successful operations and their assistance to the Bicolano community during last year’s Severe Tropical Storm Kristine. Peñafiel also mentioned that the visit provided valuable encouragement and insights that would enhance their dedication to excellence.
During his visit, Brawner reminded the soldiers to steer clear of political discussions on social media and to concentrate on their duties as peacekeepers. He commended the accomplishments of the 9ID and Joint Task Force Bicol in 2024, emphasizing the importance of mutual support among the troops and encouraging them to express their concerns and seek assistance when necessary.
