A new two-story Senior Citizen Building, costing PHP13.5 million and funded by the Senior Citizens Party-list, was officially inaugurated in Alta Tierra Village, Jaro district, Iloilo City. The opening ceremony, led by Senior Citizens Party-list Representative Rodolfo Ordanes, took place on Tuesday, marking a significant step in providing a dedicated space for the elderly.
Rep. Ordanes emphasized that the building will serve as a hub for senior citizens to engage in various activities, fostering a sense of community and purpose. He highlighted the party-list’s commitment to constructing similar facilities nationwide, aiming to offer seniors a place to socialize and stay active, which he believes can help prevent rapid aging and dementia.
Matilde Treñas, special assistant to Mayor Jerry Treñas, announced plans to introduce skills training programs at the center, starting with crochet in the Jaro district. She stressed the importance of maximizing the use of the senior citizens center, noting that many elderly individuals are often left at home with little to do. The center aims to provide them with a place to look forward to and engage with peers.
The city has already initiated similar programs in other districts. In Arevalo, the Technical Institute of Iloilo City (TIIC) launched a ‘trash to cash’ initiative, recycling old boxes into useful items like organizers and tissue holders. Meanwhile, in Mandurriao, seniors are being trained in rug-making.
Beyond hosting events, the new center will also offer administrative services, allowing senior citizens to obtain necessary forms without having to visit the Office of the Senior Citizens Affairs at city hall.
Rep. Ordanes also shared positive news regarding the removal of the purchase booklet requirement for buying medicines, which will ease the process for seniors who often forget their booklets. He encouraged seniors to report any violations to the local Office of the Senior Citizens Affairs or directly to his office.
Additionally, Ordanes expressed hope for the passage of the Early Voting Act, currently pending in the Senate, which would allow senior citizens to vote a week before national and local elections. He also mentioned two other pending bills: the Universal Pension, which would provide a monthly pension to all senior citizens, and the Geriatric Act, aimed at establishing a geriatric hospital in every region of the country.
