Ilocos Norte Aims to Finalize GovNet Project by May

·

In a significant step towards digital transformation, Ilocos Norte is set to complete the first phase of the government network (GovNet) initiative by May, just before the upcoming elections on May 12. This project aims to enhance internet connectivity for 85 government agencies in the region. Gerald Victor Calamaan, the provincial head of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), announced that the contractor has begun the fiber installation process as per the finalized plan. The Capitol will act as the central server, distributing a 10 GB connection to all offices involved.

The DICT is tasked with supplying the fiber optic cores and necessary peripherals to establish connections between GovNet and government offices, promoting transparency, efficiency, and effective governance through advanced technology. The initiative is backed by a PHP21 million budget allocated for e-governance projects in the province. Once fully operational, the system is expected to streamline digital government transactions, thereby boosting economic growth and enhancing the quality of life for residents.

In addition to the GovNet project, the DICT is actively working on expanding public WiFi access across the province. Currently, installation is underway at 54 sites, including village halls and schools, with 40 percent of these locations already connected. Calamaan mentioned that while the current bandwidth of public WiFi is limited, it is expected to improve significantly upon the completion of GovNet Phase 1.

The GovNet initiative is a key component of the DICT’s E-Government Masterplan, which focuses on establishing fiber-to-the-building connections for various public institutions, including government agencies, schools, local government units, and hospitals.
