Philippine Coast Guard Halts Small Boat Operations in Catanduanes Amid Rough Seas

·

In response to hazardous weather conditions, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has issued a directive halting the operation of small sea vessels along the northern and eastern coasts of Catanduanes. The decision, announced on Thursday, was made in light of gale-force winds that have been reported in the region. The Coast Guard Station in Catanduanes specifically targeted all watercraft with a gross tonnage of 250, as well as fishing boats and other small vessels, prohibiting their sailing until further notice. The sea conditions are forecasted to remain rough to very rough, posing significant risks to smaller crafts. The affected areas include the towns of Pandan, Bagamanoc, Panganiban, Viga, Gigmoto, Baras, and Bato. Although larger vessels are permitted to sail, the PCG has urged them to proceed with caution due to the potential for high waves. This advisory comes as the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has also issued a heavy rainfall warning for the Bicol region, influenced by a shear line. The shear line is expected to cause moderate to heavy rains over Albay, Catanduanes, Camarines Sur, and Camarines Norte, with rainfall potentially lasting two to three hours and impacting surrounding areas. Local authorities and the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices are encouraged to keep a close watch on the evolving weather situation.
