Six Minors Rescued and Australian Detained at Cebu Port

·

In a recent operation at Hagnaya Port in San Remigio, Cebu, authorities successfully rescued six minors and detained an Australian national. The group was on the verge of departing for Bantayan Island, a popular tourist destination, when they were intercepted by the police. The incident occurred as the sun set over the picturesque beaches of Bantayan Island, captured in an undated photograph.

Police Executive Master Sergeant Yuri Colonia, the chief investigator at the San Remigio Police Station, reported that the Australian was arrested by tourist police at the port. The foreigner, who had been staying at a hotel in Cebu City, failed to produce a passport or any valid documentation when requested by the authorities. The minors, aged between 15 and 17, were reportedly accompanying the Australian for an island-hopping adventure.

Further investigations revealed that the Australian might have a history of child exploitation in Cebu City. Despite claims from the minors that they were with the foreigner voluntarily, the police suspect a potential violation of Republic Act No. 7610, which safeguards children against abuse, exploitation, and discrimination, particularly prohibiting the transportation of minors by unrelated individuals.

The Australian now faces legal charges, while the rescued minors have been placed under the care of the Department of Social Welfare and Development in Central Visayas, ensuring their safety and well-being.
