In anticipation of the Holy Week and the upcoming national and local elections scheduled for May 12, the Philippine Coast Guard in Bicol (PCG-5) has significantly enhanced security measures at ports throughout the region. Commodore Ivan Roldan, the Coast Guard District Bicol Commander, announced on Monday that over 800 personnel are now stationed at various ports across the six provinces of Bicol to ensure the safety of travelers and the integrity of the electoral process.
Roldan detailed that the Coast Guard has intensified patrols and inspections at all stations and substations. He emphasized the deployment of composite teams, which include K-9 units and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams, to monitor seaports around the clock. This heightened vigilance aims to prevent the smuggling of firearms and narcotics, with a particular focus on major ports such as Pilar and Matnog in Sorsogon, Tabaco City in Albay, and Pasacao in Camarines Sur.
The region currently boasts 49 sniffer dogs, which have been instrumental in narcotics detection efforts. Roldan noted that the Coast Guard is preparing for an expected surge in passenger numbers as the summer, Holy Week, and election period approach. He reassured the public of the PCG-Bicol’s commitment to maintaining peace and order during the elections, ensuring the safety of maritime transport, and being ready to respond to any emergencies that may arise during election-related activities.
