House Speaker Defers Impeachment Timing to Senate Regarding VP Sara Duterte

·

House Speaker and Leyte 1st District Representative Ferdinand Martin Romualdez has stated that the decision on when to initiate impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte lies with the Senate. This statement came during an ambush interview where Romualdez emphasized that the timing is at the discretion of the senators. He refrained from commenting further on the impeachment complaint.

The impeachment complaint, which has garnered signatures from at least 215 members of the House of Representatives, was submitted to the Senate Secretariat before the 5 p.m. deadline on Wednesday, February 5, 2025. The House will be on recess until June 2, and senators have indicated that they will address the complaint once sessions resume.

Romualdez was in his home province on Friday to oversee the groundbreaking of the PHP750-million Benjamin Romualdez International Convention Center, named in honor of his late father, who was Leyte’s governor from 1967 to 1986.

In a related development, 25 more lawmakers have shown interest in supporting the fourth impeachment complaint against Duterte, potentially increasing the number of endorsers from 215 to 240, which would represent over 75 percent of the House’s 306 members.
