The Antique Provincial Board has moved forward with a significant decision to enhance the annual salary of Child Development Workers (CDWs) from PHP 10,000 to PHP 15,000, passing the proposal on its second reading. Board Member Mayella Mae Plameras-Ladislao, who spearheaded the initiative through Provincial Ordinance No. 2021-296, highlighted the importance of recognizing the dedication and sacrifices of CDWs during a regular session held on Monday. The ordinance, named “An Ordinance Granting Financial Remuneration and Privileges to CDWs in the Province of Antique, Appropriating Funds Thereof and for Other Purposes,” reflects the provincial government’s commitment to the Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) program. Ladislao stressed that the early years are crucial for building human capital, enhancing children’s social, physical, psychological, and intellectual capacities. She underscored the essential role CDWs play in early childhood education, offering vital care, nurturing, and foundational learning experiences. The salary increase, backed by evidence of the positive impact CDWs have on children’s cognitive, social, and emotional development, will benefit approximately 760 CDWs starting December 15. In related news, Comelec Acting Regional Director Wil Arceño noted that a ban on the disbursement of public funds for social services will be in place from March 28 to May 11, though it remains unclear whether this will affect the implementation of the ordinance for CDWs during the upcoming elections.
