·

In a strategic move to enhance development across Samar Island, Governors Sharee Ann Tan of Samar and Edwin Ongchuan of Northern Samar convened in Calbayog City on February 11, 2025, to advocate for the funding of 11 pivotal road projects. The meeting, held at Northwest Samar State University, aimed to accelerate the island’s growth by improving connectivity among its three provinces: Samar, Northern Samar, and Eastern Samar.

Governor Tan highlighted the dual focus of the meeting: securing necessary funds and addressing insurgency issues that could impact project implementation. Governor Ongchuan expressed gratitude towards the national government for its support in peace initiatives and infrastructure development, specifically mentioning projects like the Mondragon-Silvino Lubos Road and the Samar Pacific Coastal Road (SPCR) projects, including the recently approved PHP7.2 billion SPCR 2 project connecting Laoang to the Samar mainland.

The governors discussed several key projects, including the nearly completed E. Duran to Macatingog Road in Bobon, Northern Samar, which will enhance connectivity between Bobon and Calbayog City. Another significant project is the PHP3.2 billion Silvino Lubos-Matuguinao Road, which will extend by 18 km and include four new bridges, aimed at combating insurgency and boosting trade.

Other projects on the agenda included the Las Navas-Jipapad Road, now 72% complete, and several roads in Matuguinao, Samar, connecting to various boundaries in Northern Samar and Eastern Samar. These projects, ranging from PHP335.25 million to PHP1.07 billion, are crucial for improving the region’s road network.

Governor Ongchuan emphasized the importance of these developments for achieving lasting peace and prosperity in Northern Samar and the entire Samar Island. The meeting was attended by key figures including Eastern Samar’s provincial planning and development officer, Samar’s 1st district representative, Calbayog City’s mayor, military officials, and representatives from the Department of Public Works and Highways.
