In 2024, Negros Occidental experienced a significant boost in its poultry sector, with chicken production rising by 8.18 percent to reach 43,652.25 metric tons, up from 40,350.82 metric tons the previous year, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA). The province also saw a 21.11 percent increase in egg production, totaling 15,603.60 metric tons compared to 12,883.75 metric tons in 2023. However, not all poultry products followed this upward trend; duck production fell by 2.82 percent to 712.97 metric tons from 733.65 metric tons, and duck egg production decreased by 5.42 percent to 1,788.37 metric tons from 1,890.89 metric tons. On the livestock front, the province faced challenges with a 17.19 percent drop in total production to 61,805.77 metric tons from 74,633.05 metric tons. The most significant decline was in hog production, which dropped by 23.38 percent to 44,581.63 metric tons from 58,182.10 metric tons, largely due to outbreaks of hog cholera and African swine fever. Goat production also saw a slight decrease of 1.38 percent to 2,681.46 metric tons from 2,718.91 metric tons. In contrast, carabao and cattle production increased by 6.66 percent and 4.5 percent respectively, with carabao production reaching 9,515.59 metric tons from 8,921.51 metric tons, and cattle production rising to 5,027.09 metric tons from 4,810.53 metric tons. These statistics were compiled from the Commercial and Backyard Livestock and Poultry Surveys conducted quarterly by the PSA.
