Caraga Region Sees Steady Birth Rate with Future Population Growth Expected

·

In a recent announcement, the Philippine Statistics Authority in Caraga (PSA-13) revealed that the region has maintained an average of 40,193 births annually from 2014 to 2023. This consistent birth rate is expected to contribute to further population growth in the coming years, according to PSA-13 Officer-in-Charge Regional Director Guillermo Lipio Jr.

The peak year for births was 2016, with 42,946 newborns, while the lowest was recorded in 2023 with 38,110, marking a 3.96% decrease from the previous year. Alongside births, the region also saw an average of 15,391 deaths per year, with the highest number in 2021 at 19,005, and a slight decrease in 2023 to 18,358.

Lipio highlighted that the ongoing trend of increasing births will likely lead to a rise in the school-age population over the next five years, impacting the demand for educational resources and services. Additionally, he noted that the working-age population is expected to grow in the next decade, potentially increasing employment opportunities in sectors such as construction and call centers.

Migration patterns are also influencing Caraga’s demographic landscape, with Butuan City attracting many due to job prospects, while many young, unmarried individuals from rural areas are migrating abroad for work. Lipio praised the efforts of the Department of Health, local government units, and the Commission on Population in implementing family planning initiatives to manage population growth.

As part of the 35th Civil Registration Month, PSA-13 is encouraging residents to engage in awareness activities and utilize free mobile birth registration services. Lipio stressed the importance of civil registration in establishing legal identity and records, which are crucial for various life events and services.

Throughout February, PSA-13 will host several events aimed at boosting birth registration rates across Caraga.
