Western Visayas Rolls Out Ambitious AI Strategy for 2025-2030

·

In a significant move towards technological advancement, Western Visayas has introduced its Artificial Intelligence (AI) Development Action Plan for the years 2025-2030. The launch took place in Iloilo City, marking a pivotal moment for the region’s future. Engineer Rowen Gelonga, who leads the Department of Science and Technology in Western Visayas and chairs the Regional Research Development and Innovation Committee, spearheaded the unveiling of this comprehensive strategy.

The plan, a first of its kind initiated by a Regional Development Council in the Philippines, aims to leverage AI to tackle regional challenges and spur economic growth. It encompasses nine critical areas: governance and ethics, talent development, AI research and development, industry applications, startup growth, infrastructure, data sharing, partnerships, and public awareness. Gelonga emphasized that the plan is tailored to meet the unique developmental needs of Western Visayas.

While the action plan sets a broad framework, Gelonga noted that further detailed planning sessions are necessary to outline specific projects and activities. These will be crucial in achieving the region’s goal of becoming one of the most AI-driven and economically competitive areas in the country by 2030.

Gelonga also highlighted the Department of Science and Technology’s commitment to funding AI research and development over the next three years. He encouraged local stakeholders to propose initiatives, underscoring the potential of AI to significantly boost the regional economy. The launch of this plan signals Western Visayas’ determination to harness AI for sustainable development and economic prosperity.
