Cebu City to Celebrate 88th Charter Day by Honoring Notable Figures

Cebu City is set to commemorate its 88th Charter Day on February 24, 2025, with a special tribute to several distinguished Cebuano figures. Among those to be honored are former Supreme Court Chief Justice Hilario Davide Jr. and the renowned singer and actress Pilita Corrales, known as ‘Asia’s Queen of Songs.’ The city kicked off the celebrations with the opening of the ‘Kita, Ang Katawhan: Mga Magtutukod sa Dakbayan’ (We, the People Who Founded Our City) Art Exhibit, showcasing the contributions of these notable personalities. Other honorees include the late philanthropist Jon Ramon Aboitiz, former Supreme Court Chief Justice Marcelo Fernan, legislator and writer Vicente Rama, who is considered the father of the city’s charter, and the late President Sergio Osmeña Sr. Mayor Raymond Garcia emphasized the significance of these leaders in shaping the city’s history and identity during the exhibit’s opening at the Cebu City Legislative Building. The exhibit also features artworks by Jay Nathan Jore, a curator, art historian, and professor at the University of the Philippines-Cebu. Mayor Garcia expressed gratitude towards these individuals for their role in building Cebu City into what it is today.
