Red Tide Alert Issued for Two Bays in Surigao

·

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in the Caraga region (BFAR-13) has raised a red tide alert for Lianga Bay in Surigao del Sur and Litalit Bay in San Benito, Siargao Island. This warning was announced on Tuesday from Butuan City. Tests conducted on shellfish from these locations confirmed the presence of paralytic shellfish toxins, prompting the alert. BFAR-13 has advised the public to avoid harvesting, selling, or consuming shellfish and Acetes sp. (known locally as alamang) from these affected areas. However, fish, crabs, and shrimp from these bays are safe for consumption provided their internal organs are removed and they are thoroughly cleaned prior to cooking. Ongoing monitoring by BFAR and local government units will continue, and public awareness campaigns regarding the red tide alert are currently in progress.
