In a promising development for public safety, the Bicol region has experienced a notable decline in crime rates during January 2025, as reported by the Police Regional Office in Bicol (PRO-5). According to PRO-5 Director Brig. Gen. Andre Dizon, the region recorded 1,636 crimes this January, a decrease from the 1,883 cases reported in January 2024. This reduction is attributed to increased police visibility and more aggressive law enforcement efforts, which have effectively deterred criminal activities.
Dizon highlighted that the strategic deployment of police personnel in critical areas, along with ongoing crime prevention initiatives, has significantly contributed to creating a safer environment. He emphasized that PRO-5’s dedication to rapid response, enhanced community coordination, and intelligence-led operations has been instrumental in maintaining peace and order throughout the region. Impressively, 91.5% of the crimes recorded, totaling 1,497 cases, were cleared, indicating a high level of police effectiveness.
A case is deemed cleared when at least one offender is identified, there is sufficient evidence for charges, and the offender has been formally charged in court. Among the seven focus crimes, theft topped the list with 81 incidents, followed by rape with 48 cases, robbery with 23, physical injury with 18, murder with 13, motorcycle carnapping with 10, homicide with 5, and motor vehicle carnapping with one case.
The PRO-5 stressed the critical role of proactive policing and community engagement in preventing crime. Dizon remarked that the substantial reduction in crime incidents reflects the success of heightened police presence, intensified operations, and active community involvement. He affirmed that ensuring a safer Bicol region is a collective effort, and PRO-5 will continue its relentless efforts to protect the public and uphold the law.
Dizon also committed to further strengthening strategies, enhancing response capabilities, and deepening collaboration with local communities to maintain this downward trend in crime and enhance public safety across the Bicol Region.
