Philippine Departments of Agriculture and Trade Join Forces to Enhance Agri Exports and Launch Helpdesk

·

In a significant move to elevate the Philippines’ agricultural exports, the Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) have formalized a partnership. This collaboration, announced on December 16, 2024, aims to not only increase the export of agricultural products but also to establish an Agri-Export Helpdesk in the coming year.

DA Secretary Francisco Tiu-Laurel Jr. emphasized that the synergy between the two departments would harness the full potential of the nation’s agricultural sector. The agreement focuses on enhancing trade promotion, attracting investments, supporting small and medium enterprises, and tackling issues related to market access and tariffs.

Key commodities targeted for export growth include bananas, mangoes, seaweed, and high-value crops such as coffee and cacao. Tiu-Laurel described the partnership as a crucial step towards a thriving and sustainable agricultural industry.

The forthcoming Agri-Export Helpdesk, set to commence operations in January, will address export-related issues and foster better collaboration between the government and private sector through commodity councils. Notable private sector participants include the Philippine Exporters Confederation, Inc. and the Philippine Food Processors and Exporters Organization Inc.

The ultimate goal of the DA and DTI is to position the Philippines as a leader in the global food export market. In September, the country’s agricultural exports reached USD492.6 million, accounting for 8 percent of total exports, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority.
