The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) in the Philippines has taken legal action against Yuhang Liu, a Chinese national suspected of espionage, charging him with violations of the country’s cybercrime laws. Liu was apprehended in Makati City in May and faced charges filed on December 16, 2024, at the Quezon City Prosecutor’s Office. The arrest occurred after a tip-off about Liu coercing someone to deliver hacking devices to his home, which were allegedly intended for use in hacking mobile phones’ international mobile equipment identities at critical locations. During the arrest, Liu was found carrying a handgun without proper documentation. Further searches uncovered an array of items including firearms, ammunition, communication equipment, and electronics at both his vehicle and residence. CIDG chief Brig. Gen. Nicolas Torre III emphasized the agency’s commitment to combating cybercrimes and ensuring accountability. Liu is currently held at the Bureau of Immigration’s facility in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig.
