NAIA Introduces Automated Parking to Ease Traffic and Wait Times

·

The Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila aims to enhance its services by launching an innovative automated parking system at Terminal 3, effective March 1. This new system, introduced by New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC), which operates the airport, is designed to decrease waiting periods and facilitate smoother traffic within the facility. Expansion to Terminals 1 and 2 is scheduled for March 14.

Upon entering the parking area, drivers will collect an automated ticket from unmanned entries and use a QR code for exiting. Currently, the system supports cash payments, but from March 14, it will accommodate diverse payment methods, including GCash, PayMaya, as well as debit and credit cards offering more convenience to users.

To further enhance operational efficiency, NNIC plans to introduce real-time parking slot availability displays at Terminal 3 next month. This innovation will allow drivers to check for empty spaces before they enter. A similar upgrade will be implemented at Terminals 1 and 2 by May.

In addition, July will see the implementation of autopay stations across all terminals, significantly expediting transaction processes. These initiatives are part of NNIC’s ongoing strategy to improve and modernize airport facilities, having taken over operations in September 2024.
Nurturing an agenda of world-class transformation, the San Miguel Corporation (SMC)-led consortium has pledged an investment exceeding ₱170 billion. Plans include augmenting parking capacity through new infrastructure projects alongside hefty rate increases; for example, overnight parking for cars has risen from ₱300 to ₱1,200, while rates for motorcycles and buses have jumped to ₱480 and ₱2,400, respectively. Although these adjustments have elicited public criticism, NNIC defends them as essential to optimizing the parking experience for airport passengers by ensuring availability.
