Europeans and Ukraine Seek to End Conflict Amid Tensions with US

LONDON, UK — In a collaborative effort, the United Kingdom and France are working with Ukraine to devise strategies to halt the ongoing conflict with Russia, as shared by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Sunday. The announcement came in the lead-up to crucial discussions amongst European leaders responding to strained relations between Kyiv and Washington.

Prior to a prominent summit in London, featuring over a dozen European leaders aiming for progress on the prolonged conflict, Starmer emphasized the importance of global cooperation, remarking, “We must collaborate. After three years of intense conflict, our focus should now be on attaining lasting peace.” He also noted that the UK and France, along with potential additional countries, are partnering with Ukraine to formulate a peace plan, which will then be presented to the United States.

With concerns rising over President Trump’s potential departure from supporting Kyiv in peace talks with Moscow, Ukraine’s allies are reinforcing their unwavering support.

During Zelenskyy’s London visit, warmly welcomed by Starmer, a significant financial pledge was made to bolster Ukraine’s defense. This loan adds support to Ukraine’s military capabilities and will be repaid using profits from frozen Russian assets.

The London summit convenes leaders from across Europe, including representatives from France, Germany, Italy, and institutions such as NATO and the European Union, especially as questions about continued US support for NATO loom large. The meeting will also discuss enhancing Europe’s collective defense.

Upon his arrival in London, Zelenskyy received a warm greeting, with Starmer expressing, “You’re very welcome in Downing Street.” Talks focused on ending the war with a fair and lasting peace, ensuring that Russia cannot use a ceasefire as an opportunity to rearm.

While tensions flared during Zelenskyy’s recent trip to the White House, where he was met with harsh accusations from President Trump, the commitment between the US and Ukraine as strategic partners persists, even amid calls for straightforward communication.

Despite recent challenges, including challenging discussions with Trump, European allies and Ukraine aim to strengthen their coalition and continue advocating for solutions that prevent future aggression from Russia.
