Iloilo City Mayor Declines to Cancel Classes on February 25, Citing Presidential Prerogative

·

In Iloilo City, Mayor Jerry Treñas has announced that there will be no suspension of classes on February 25, 2025, as the date has been removed from the national list of holidays. During a press conference held on February 24, Mayor Treñas clarified that the decision to not recognize February 25 as a holiday is a matter of presidential discretion, and no law requires its observance. He stated, ‘It’s a presidential prerogative, which means the president has the right to declare or not declare it as a holiday.’ Consequently, the city government will not commemorate the EDSA People Power Revolution’s anniversary with a class suspension, though private schools retain the option to do so. Mayor Treñas emphasized the importance of remembering the peaceful EDSA revolution, describing it as a unique event in history and a culmination of a long struggle that predates Martial Law. He honored the sacrifices made by many in the fight for change and stressed the value of democracy, noting, ‘It is important not to forget because democracy is really worth fighting for. Whether we make mistakes, in a democracy, there is always that chance for us to correct that mistake.’
