In a solemn ceremony, the Philippine Army’s 79th Infantry Battalion (79IB) gathered to remember the sacrifices and lives lost during the intense week-long conflict known as the ‘Battle of Pinapugasan’ in Escalante City, Negros Occidental. The event, which took place from February 21 to 27, 2024, was commemorated on its first anniversary with a holy mass and candle-lighting ceremony at the battalion’s headquarters in Sagay City.
Lt. Col. Arnel Calaogan, the commander of the 79IB, emphasized that the gathering was not a celebration of the battle itself but a tribute to those affected by the conflict. This included government troops, members of the Citizens Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU), and even the rebels who were victims of misleading propaganda. The clashes resulted in the deaths of three rebels, including two former child warriors, Emaryn ‘Jandie’ Pastedio and Christopher ‘Michael’ Ebarle, and Jose Caramihan, a former anti-crime volunteer.
The conflict also left three soldiers and one militiaman wounded during the initial encounter on February 21. The injured were identified as 2nd Lt. Frenzy Jarey Gonzales, Privates First Class Jiesard Mesina and Sandie Cabayle, and CAFGU member Eduardo Linogon. The violence led to the displacement of 1,092 individuals from 268 families and the suspension of classes in eight villages in Escalante City and the neighboring Toboso town.
The commemoration event saw the families of the fallen rebels, who have been receiving government assistance, joining the 79IB in their remembrance. Lt. Col. Calaogan highlighted the importance of the event in honoring the victories achieved and the enduring values of solidarity, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of peace for lasting security in northern Negros.
