Heroes Honored: Army Marks One Year Since Fierce North Negros Battle

·

In a solemn ceremony, the Philippine Army’s 79th Infantry Battalion (79IB) gathered to remember the sacrifices and lives lost during the intense week-long conflict known as the ‘Battle of Pinapugasan’ in Barangay Pinapugasan, Escalante City, Negros Occidental. The clashes, which occurred from February 21 to 27, 2024, in Sitio Mansulao, were commemorated on the first anniversary with a holy mass and candle-lighting ceremony at the battalion’s headquarters in Sagay City.

Lt. Col. Arnel Calaogan, the commander of the 79IB, emphasized that the event was not a celebration of war but a tribute to those affected by the conflict. This included the soldiers and members of the Citizens Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU) who fought valiantly for peace, as well as the rebels who were victims of misleading propaganda.

The battle resulted in the deaths of three rebels, identified as Emaryn ‘Jandie’ Pastedio, Christopher ‘Michael’ Ebarle, both former child recruits, and Jose Caramihan, a former anti-crime volunteer. On the government side, three soldiers and one militiaman were wounded during the initial clash on February 21. The injured were named as 2nd Lt. Frenzy Jarey Gonzales, Privates First Class Jiesard Mesina and Sandie Cabayle, and CAFGU member Eduardo Linogon.

The conflict also led to significant disruption in the local community, with 1,092 individuals from 268 families displaced and classes suspended in eight villages in Escalante City and the entire neighboring Toboso town.

During the commemoration, families of the fallen rebels, who have been receiving government support, joined the 79IB in the memorial activities. Lt. Col. Calaogan highlighted the importance of the event in honoring the achievements and the enduring values of unity, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of peace for lasting security in northern Negros.
