Filipino Voters Urged to Shun Pro-China Candidates in Crucial Midterm Elections

·

In a passionate plea at the Saturday News Forum in Quezon City, Commodore Jay Tarriela, the Philippine Coast Guard’s spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, called on Filipino voters to reject candidates who favor China in the upcoming May 12 midterm elections. Tarriela emphasized the importance of electing officials who stand firmly behind President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s policies on protecting the West Philippine Sea (WPS).

Tarriela made it clear that the issue of the WPS transcends political affiliations, stating, ‘My position on the West Philippine Sea is not a political issue. It concerns all Filipinos, regardless of which administration they support.’ He stressed the need for elected officials to support and defend Marcos’ stance on the WPS, urging voters to ensure that no pro-China candidates are elected.

He highlighted the significance of this election, noting it is the first time Filipinos are fully aware of the WPS issue during a national midterm election. Tarriela warned against electing senators, congressmen, or local government executives who prioritize China over the Philippines, disregarding the welfare of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), the Philippine Coast Guard, and local fishermen.

Expressing concern, Tarriela pointed out the challenges the AFP and PCG would face in their modernization efforts and acquiring new vessels if elected officials do not support the current administration’s WPS policy. He urged voters to make informed choices, ensuring that those elected prioritize the nation’s interests over foreign influences.
