In a groundbreaking move to celebrate the pivotal role of Filipino women in the nation’s history, Quezon City has inaugurated the Tandang Sora Women’s Museum. This landmark institution, opened on February 19, 2025, pays homage to Melchora Aquino, famously known as Tandang Sora, the ‘Mother of the Philippine Revolution,’ and underscores the enduring impact of women on the country’s development.
Located adjacent to the Tandang Sora National Shrine on Banlat Road, the museum is a testament to the strength, struggles, and victories of Filipino women throughout history. Mayor Joy Belmonte proudly announced the opening, highlighting the museum’s role in preserving and promoting the contributions of women to Philippine society. ‘This museum is not merely a repository of artifacts; it is a powerful narrative of the resilience and achievements of Filipino women,’ she stated.
The museum aims to inspire future generations to champion equality, justice, and progress. It features a comprehensive journey through ‘HERstory,’ showcasing women’s roles from pre-colonial times to contemporary feminist movements. Key sections include a HERstorical Philippine Timeline, the Women in Action Gallery, and a creativity corner designed for interactive art and discussions.
The two-story ‘bahay na bato’-style building was funded by Senator Risa Hontiveros, a staunch advocate for women’s rights, and designed by heritage conservation expert Architect Gerard Lico. Hontiveros emphasized the museum’s significance in advancing gender equality, stating, ‘This is not just about remembering the past; it’s about empowering women today and in the future.’
The museum offers free admission during National Arts Month in February and Women’s Month in March, with year-round free access for Quezon City residents. It is open from Tuesdays to Sundays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and provides free entry for persons with disabilities and the elderly. As visitors explore the museum, they engage with the ongoing legacy of the Filipina’s indomitable spirit.
