In a bold move to enhance the tourism sector, Alyansa Para sa Bagong Pilipinas senatorial candidate Benjamin Abalos Jr. has pledged his support for the development of tourism in Negros Oriental. Speaking at a press conference in Dumaguete City, the former Interior and Local Government chief expressed his enthusiasm for the proposed PHP17 billion Dumaguete City Airport project in Bacong town, which he believes will not only benefit Negros Oriental but also neighboring Negros Occidental and parts of Siquijor, especially as tourist numbers continue to rise.

Abalos highlighted the potential of the new airport to spur regional development, particularly noting the improved peace and order situation that makes the area more attractive to visitors. He praised the region’s diving sites, specifically mentioning the renowned Apo Island, and the significant awards won by the Department of Tourism in diving categories. He emphasized the rich biodiversity of the area, suggesting that the new airport would significantly increase both domestic and international tourist traffic.

The Dumaguete City Airport project, with a total cost of PHP17.06 billion, is set to receive PHP13.15 billion in funding from the Export-Import Bank of Korea (KEXIM). The development will span 197.55 hectares in Bacong and is expected to not only boost tourism but also enhance trade, stimulate economic activities, and improve the standard of living in the province.
