In a significant move to support sustainable agriculture, the Department of Agriculture in the Davao Region has handed over a PHP1-million solar-powered irrigation system to the Sibulan Organic Banana Growers Multipurpose Cooperative in Davao City. The handover took place on February 19, 2025, in Barangay Sibulan, Toril District, marking a pivotal moment for the cooperative and the broader community.
The system, equipped with six solar modules each boasting a 555-watt capacity, powers a three-horsepower submersible pump capable of delivering up to 5.2 cubic meters of water per hour. This setup is designed to irrigate up to three hectares of land, promising to revolutionize water management for the cooperative’s 49 members who manage a 42-hectare banana plantation.
Joedel Leliza, an agricultural program coordinating officer from DA-11, highlighted the multifaceted benefits of the project. He noted that it would not only ensure a steady water supply but also cut costs, promote the use of renewable energy, and boost productivity across the region.
Ginalyn Atillo, chairperson of the cooperative, expressed her gratitude and excitement, describing the project as a dream come true. She emphasized the significance of the initiative, as their area is recognized as the city’s first organic zone. The cooperative, which exports organically grown bananas to Japan, also plans to diversify its crops by including vegetables, coffee, and cacao.
Looking ahead, the DA-Organic Agriculture Program is set to extend another solar-powered irrigation system to the community in Mabini, Davao de Oro, further spreading the benefits of sustainable farming practices.
