Senate Budgets Under P1 Million for VP Duterte’s Impeachment Trial Preparations

·

Senate President Francis Escudero announced on February 19, 2025, that the Senate has set aside less than PHP 1 million for the upcoming impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte. This budget will cover essential items such as identification cards, judicial robes for the senators acting as judges, and legal fees. Escudero made these remarks during a press conference held in Quezon City.

To ensure efficiency, the Senate plans to engage an external law firm for legal support and will reuse the witness stand from the 2012 impeachment trial of former Chief Justice Renato Corona. Escudero humorously noted that the witness box remains in good condition, requiring only a new coat of varnish, and emphasized the importance of resource conservation.

Preparations for the trial include a recent mock-up session by Senate staff to assess necessary adjustments. This involves repositioning microphones and updating audio lines to differ from their usual setup during plenary sessions. Additionally, the Senate is refining its visitor protocols to facilitate smooth movement for representatives of both the prosecution and defense within the chamber.

Special identification cards will be issued to streamline access and reduce the daily hassle of logbooks, similar to the routine followed by Senate employees. Despite the trial’s high-profile nature, Escudero assured the public that the Senate is committed to keeping costs under control.

With the trial now inevitable, Escudero stressed that the Senate is diligently preparing, even during the congressional recess.
