President Marcos Signs Law Setting Term for Philippine Coast Guard Commandant

·

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has enacted a new law that establishes a fixed term for the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) commandant, aiming to enhance the stability of the agency. The legislation, known as Republic Act 12122, was signed by Marcos on February 18, 2025, and sets the term of the PCG commandant at three years, starting from the date of appointment. The term can be terminated earlier by the President if deemed necessary. Upon completion of the three-year term or upon being relieved by the President, the commandant is required to retire. This law applies to commandants appointed under the Philippine Coast Guard Law of 2009 and other relevant statutes. The introduction of a fixed term is expected to enable the PCG commandant to implement long-term strategies and reforms, particularly in light of ongoing tensions in the West Philippine Sea. RA 12122 became effective immediately following its publication in the Official Gazette or in a newspaper of general circulation.
