The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) recently engaged in discussions with Air India’s leadership to explore the feasibility of establishing direct flight connections between the Philippines and India. The talks, which took place at CAAP’s headquarters, focused on potential flight routes, how often flights could operate, and the logistics needed to streamline the approval process. CAAP also outlined the necessary documentation, technical requirements, and procedural steps for obtaining flight permissions. According to CAAP’s information officer, Bea Bernardo, the exact locations for these direct flights are still under consideration. Previously, Philippine Airlines operated a route to New Delhi from 2011 to 2013 but delayed its relaunch in 2019 due to geopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan. Both CAAP and Air India are enthusiastic about the potential economic and cultural advantages of direct flights, expecting an increase in passenger traffic and new business prospects. CAAP Director General Manuel Antonio Tamayo emphasized the agency’s dedication to a smooth approval process while upholding strict safety and operational standards. The discussions come on the heels of celebrations marking the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties and the 76th Republic Day of India, where the importance of tourism and cooperation was highlighted by Indian Ambassador Shri Harsh Kumar Jain. Additionally, the Department of Tourism’s Secretary Christina Frasco expressed support for direct flights to destinations like Clark and Cebu.
