Stricter Measures for Game Fowl Transport Permits in Central Visayas Amid Bird Flu Concerns

·

In response to the ongoing threat of avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) in Central Visayas has tightened the regulations for obtaining transportation permits for game fowls. Dr. Ma. Nikki Xennia Crispo, a veterinarian with BAI’s Veterinary Quarantine Services in the region, emphasized that only those who can provide all required documentation will be granted shipping permits for their gamecocks.

During a segment on the radio show ‘Usapang Agrikultura’, Dr. Crispo explained that BAI issues permits to individuals transporting up to five chickens. To secure these permits, applicants must obtain a veterinary health certificate from either a government or private veterinarian who has inspected the chickens, along with a certificate of free status on avian influenza from the Department of Agriculture’s Central Visayas field office, confirming that the roosters are not infected with the virus.

For those looking to transport more than five chickens, such as regular shippers or traders, additional documentation is necessary. This includes a handler’s license, registration of the transport carrier, a veterinary health certificate, farm registration, an Animal Disease Monitoring Compliance Certificate (ADMCC), and a certificate of free status on avian influenza.

Dr. Crispo also noted that one-time or non-regular shippers seeking permits for pets like cats, dogs, or gamecocks face stringent requirements. For gamecocks, applicants must submit a veterinary health certificate, a vaccination card, and a certificate of free status on avian influenza, especially critical due to active cases of the virus in the Luzon area.

Furthermore, BAI is also vigilant in issuing permits for the transport of meat and other poultry products, ensuring they are free from bird flu and safe for human consumption.
