In a groundbreaking move, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) in the Philippines has initiated the first drone-assisted medicine delivery in Southeast Asia. The launch took place in Barangay Niogan, Pililla, Rizal, in collaboration with mWell and Philippine Flying Labs on January 31. DICT Secretary Ivan John Uy announced that this initiative is a component of the SMART Villages and SMART Islands framework, aimed at overcoming logistical and geographical challenges to deliver essential medications to remote areas. Uy emphasized that this pilot project is just the beginning, with plans to expand nationwide after assessing the encountered challenges and variables. The program is set to enhance digital healthcare services, particularly for geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs), by providing innovative e-health solutions. Uy also stressed the importance of public-private partnerships in achieving these goals, noting that government efforts alone are insufficient. Barangay Niogan’s Chairperson, Placido Quitiong, expressed optimism about the program’s potential to deliver timely medical aid to the elderly, disabled, and seriously ill residents of their community.
