The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) is maintaining its high alert status against the New People’s Army (NPA) to ensure the 2025 midterm elections remain undisturbed by communist insurgents. Despite recent successful military operations that have significantly weakened the NPA, the AFP is not lowering its guard, according to AFP spokesperson Col. Francel Margareth Padilla.
Padilla emphasized the importance of vigilance, stating that even though the NPA’s strength and influence have declined, the military must prevent any remaining members from disrupting the peace, particularly as the elections on May 12 approach. The AFP’s commitment comes in the wake of several key NPA figures being neutralized in recent operations.
One notable incident involved the death of Myrna Sularte, known as ‘Maria Malaya’, the secretary of the NPA’s North Eastern Mindanao Regional Committee (NEMRC), during a confrontation with the 901st Infantry Brigade in Barangay Pianing, Butuan City on February 12. On the same day, two high-ranking NPA commanders, Larry Garcia alias ‘Joven’ and his vice commander known as ‘Gaga’ and ‘Garing’, were also taken out by the 3rd Special Forces Battalion in Sitio Katipunan, Barangay San Lorenzo, Prosperidad, Agusan Del Sur.
Padilla highlighted that these operations, combined with community engagement and cooperation with other law enforcement agencies, are crucial for securing a peaceful electoral process. She noted that the elimination of these NPA leaders reflects the ongoing challenges faced by the insurgents, exacerbated by sustained military efforts and increasing community rejection of their violent ideology.
The AFP is calling on the remaining members of the communist terrorist group (CTG) to surrender, participate in government reintegration programs, and embrace peace. Padilla affirmed that the AFP will continue its relentless efforts to neutralize any remaining threats while ensuring the safety and rights of the Filipino people.
