The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) has expressed its readiness to support the restoration of heritage structures in Iloilo City, which are designated as Cultural Heritage Tourism Zones under Republic Act No. 10555. Key sites such as the Jaro Cathedral, Molo Church, the Iloilo City Central Business District, Fort San Pedro, Jaro Plaza Complex, Molo Plaza Complex, and Plaza Libertad Complex are included in these zones.
Mayor Jerry Treñas highlighted that the law allows the NHCP to paint private buildings within these zones. Treñas, who was instrumental in passing the law during his time in Congress, noted that Plaza Libertad is covered under this provision, enabling the city to seek assistance for all heritage buildings, including the historic Calle Real.
The City Architect’s Office is currently drafting a formal request to access this support. Additionally, Treñas has specifically asked the NHCP to help rehabilitate the San Jose Placer Parish Church located in Plaza Libertad, one of the oldest churches in the city, originally constructed by the Jesuits in 1606 and later managed by the Augustinians.
Following a recent meeting with NHCP executives, Treñas confirmed the commission’s openness to the restoration projects, signaling a positive step forward for preserving Iloilo’s rich historical architecture.
