Fuel Surcharge Escalates to Level 5 in March, Announces Civil Aeronautics Board

·

The Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) has announced an increase in the fuel surcharge to Level 5 starting March, marking the first adjustment of the year. This surcharge, an additional fee airlines can impose to offset fluctuating fuel costs, will affect both domestic and international flights. For example, AirAsia Philippines, a budget airline, will see domestic flight surcharges ranging from PHP151 to PHP542, while international flights will incur charges between PHP498.03 and PHP3,703.11, varying by distance. AirAsia’s spokesperson, Steve Dailisan, acknowledged the potential minor impact on travelers but reaffirmed the airline’s dedication to safe, accessible, and hassle-free travel. CAB’s Legal Division chief, Wyrlou Samodio, clarified via social media that this surcharge hike does not automatically translate to higher airfares, as that decision rests with the airlines. However, any increase in airfare must adhere to the CAB’s approved matrix. CAB executive director Carmelo Arcilla stated in a recent advisory that airlines wishing to apply the new surcharge must submit their applications to his office before the change takes effect. The conversion rate for the fuel surcharge in March is set at USD1 to PHP58.46.
