In a show of unity, the senatorial candidates of Alyansa Para sa Bagong Pilipinas voiced their support for President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s firm stance on defending the Philippines’ sovereignty over the West Philippine Sea during a press conference in Pasay City. The event, held at Citadines Bay City Manila, saw prominent figures such as Abby Binay, Francis Tolentino, Benhur Abalos, Ping Lacson, Erwin Tulfo, Vicente Sotto III, Manny Pacquiao, and Camille Villar addressing the media.

Former Senate President Vicente Sotto III praised President Marcos for signing the Philippine Maritime Zones Act into law, a piece of legislation he authored. Sotto emphasized the importance of this act in safeguarding the nation’s territorial rights, stating his full support for Marcos’ position on the West Philippine Sea. The act, officially known as Republic Act 12064, delineates the Philippines’ maritime zones, including the territorial sea, contiguous zone, exclusive economic zone, and continental shelf, and aligns with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Senator Francis Tolentino, seeking re-election, highlighted the international backing, particularly from the United States, for the Philippines’ stance against China’s aggressive actions in the West Philippine Sea. Tolentino affirmed that President Marcos’ approach is correct and aligns with global support for the Philippines’ position.

President Marcos, in a recent Palace press briefing, reiterated his commitment to defending the country’s sovereign rights over the West Philippine Sea, emphasizing that the Philippines would continue its presence in the area despite China’s provocations.
