Senator Risa Hontiveros, serving as the Senate Deputy Minority Leader, has announced her intention to launch an investigation into the escalating trends of online sexual abuse and exploitation of children (OSAEC) in Pampanga. This decision comes in the wake of a disturbing incident involving the sexual abuse of a 10-month-old infant online. Hontiveros aims to scrutinize the role of internet service providers, e-wallet services, and remittance centers in facilitating these crimes and assess their compliance with existing laws designed to prevent such atrocities. She expressed her dismay at the apparent lack of proactive measures by these entities to curb the rise of OSAEC, despite the legal obligations imposed on them. Hontiveros, who authored the Anti-OSAEC Law, stressed the urgent need for more robust enforcement of cybercrime laws to protect children from such heinous acts. She praised the efforts of the National Bureau of Investigation’s Human Trafficking Division and the National Coordination Center Against OSAEC for their swift action in apprehending the suspect in the infant’s case. Hontiveros called for a comprehensive national strategy to tackle this grave issue, emphasizing that the safety and dignity of children must be a priority.
