New Multispecies Hatchery Project Launched in Surigao del Sur

·

In a significant move to bolster local aquaculture, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Caraga (BFAR-13) has initiated the construction of a PHP26.4-million multispecies hatchery in Bislig City, Surigao del Sur. The groundbreaking ceremony, held on February 14, 2025, in Barangay Caguyao, was attended by BFAR-Caraga Director Omnia Olama and Bislig City Mayor Florencio Garay, marking a pivotal moment for the region’s fishing community.

The new facility is set to produce approximately 25 million milkfish fry each year, alongside other high-value marine species such as pompano, shrimp, and crabs. This development is expected to significantly benefit local fishing families and those reliant on the fishing industry.

Director Olama emphasized the importance of the collaboration between BFAR and the Bislig city government in realizing this project. The hatchery not only aims to enhance local production but also to reduce the Philippines’ dependence on imported milkfish fry, which currently stands at about 1.5 million pieces annually from Indonesia. BFAR-13’s chief aquaculturist, Rizalinda Abing, stated that the facility could cut these imports by up to 85% once fully operational.

BFAR will manage and fund the operations of the hatchery for the first two years, with the entire project expected to be completed within 447 days. This initiative represents a major step forward in supporting sustainable aquaculture and reducing reliance on foreign imports.
