In a significant boost to regional infrastructure, the Mati Airport in Davao Oriental has been allocated an additional PHP700 million for its runway and site development. This announcement was made by Davao Oriental 2nd District Representative Cheeno Miguel Almario during a press conference on Monday. The funds, sourced from the 2025 General Appropriations Act, are earmarked to enhance the airport’s capabilities, with PHP300 million designated for runway improvements and PHP400 million for site development.
Representative Almario emphasized that this investment is a crucial first step towards transforming Mati Airport into an international hub. He noted that while PHP400 million would suffice for basic terminal operations, elevating the airport to international standards would necessitate a larger financial commitment. Almario credited persistent lobbying efforts and support from Senator JV Ejercito for securing the funds amidst the complexities of the General Appropriations Act.
This latest funding adds to previous allocations, including PHP200 million in 2019 and an additional PHP90 million for runway extension. Last year, Almario had sought PHP300 million for the project but received only PHP100 million.
Davao Oriental 1st District Representative Nelson Dayanghirang highlighted the broader economic benefits of the airport’s development, predicting job creation and a surge in tourism and economic activity. A groundbreaking ceremony for the project took place on February 10.
Originally named Imelda R. Marcos Airport and established in 1976, Mati Airport has been underutilized for many years. This new investment marks a pivotal moment in its revival and expansion.
