In a move to better organize and strategize tree planting efforts, Iloilo City has set up a dedicated task force. This initiative was announced by Mayor Jerry Treñas during a press conference on February 17, 2025, where he highlighted the current disorganized nature of the city’s tree planting activities. The task force, to be led by the City Planning and Development Office, will include representatives from various city government offices involved in these initiatives.
A significant focus of the task force will be planting trees along bike lanes, starting from Barangay Sambag in the Jaro district, to enhance shade and promote cycling and walking. Mayor Treñas emphasized the importance of creating an inventory of potential planting sites to beautify the city. Key areas targeted for tree planting include Sunset Boulevard, circumferential roads, floodways, the Esplanade, bike lanes, and open spaces in subdivisions and schools.
The task force aims to have a finalized plan by June 30, just before Mayor Treñas’s term ends on July 1. Currently, the city’s nursery holds approximately 14,000 tree seedlings ready for planting.
