Singapore Reinforces Commitment to Freedom of Navigation During Historic Naval Visit to Philippines

·

In a significant diplomatic and military gesture, Singapore has reaffirmed its dedication to the principles of freedom of navigation and overflight during a historic visit by the Republic of Singapore Navy’s (RSN) RSS Endeavour to Manila. The visit, marking the first Singaporean naval port call in Manila in 26 years, took place from February 13 to 16, 2025, and was highlighted by a reception hosted by Singaporean Ambassador Constance See.

Ambassador See emphasized Singapore’s commitment to international law, particularly stressing the importance of freedom of navigation and overflight, which are vital for Singapore given its trade volume is three times its GDP. She called for collaborative efforts among nations to resolve maritime disputes, such as those in the South China Sea, through dialogue and diplomacy.

The RSS Endeavour’s visit was part of the Midshipman Sea Training Deployment program, providing Singaporean midshipmen with practical experience during their first sea voyage. The visit also facilitated interactions between RSN midshipmen and their Philippine Navy counterparts through various activities, including sports, fostering stronger military ties.

This visit follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding on defense cooperation between Singapore and the Philippines in July 2024, which enhances previous agreements on education, training, and support in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief efforts.
