In a significant move to support its underprivileged residents, Davao City has increased the budget for its ‘Lingap para sa Mahirap’ program to PHP600 million this year, up from PHP400 million the previous year. Ytalia Bohol, who oversees the program, announced the increase, highlighting the city’s commitment to aiding those in need. Last year, the program assisted 188,472 individuals, with daily services reaching between 700 to 800 clients across the main and satellite offices. The initiative primarily focuses on helping residents cover funeral costs, medical expenses, and medication needs. Bohol emphasized a special focus on cancer patients, noting that the budget hike was necessary to meet the rising demand for assistance. Many clients rely on the program for monthly help with chemotherapy and other medications, which is available at 42 private hospitals and three accredited pharmacies: Kalingap Pharmacy, New Botica Concept, and Murang Gamot. To access medical bill assistance, clients must present the original final bill, a medical certificate, and a barangay certificate, though those treated at Southern Philippines Medical Center only need to show the bill and a valid ID. For funeral assistance, the program requires the original funeral bill, a death certificate, and a barangay certificate, covering expenses like caskets, wakes, and embalming.
