The Philippine Department of Tourism (DOT) is making significant strides in enhancing the travel experience across the country, with Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco spearheading the initiative. On February 13, 2025, Frasco, together with Pangasinan Governor Ramon Guico III and other officials, inaugurated a new Tourist Rest Area (TRA) in Lingayen, Pangasinan. This facility, funded by a PHP10 million grant from the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA), is designed to offer travelers a range of amenities including a tourist information center, accessible restrooms for persons with disabilities and senior citizens, a breastfeeding station, a work and charging area with internet access, a dining space, and a Pasalubong Center. The TRA also incorporates eco-friendly features such as solar-powered roofs and rain catchment systems.

Secretary Frasco announced the DOT’s ambitious plan to establish 100 TRAs nationwide, with 32 already under construction and an additional 16 slated for development this year. This initiative aims to significantly improve convenience for tourists traveling throughout the Philippines. During the groundbreaking ceremony, Frasco emphasized the importance of these facilities in enhancing the overall travel experience.

Governor Guico III expressed his support for the project, noting its potential to further stimulate local tourism in Pangasinan. The province has seen a robust recovery in its tourism sector, with 8.7 million day tourists and over 430,000 overnight visitors recorded in 2024, bringing the industry back to its pre-pandemic levels.

The DOT’s efforts extend beyond the construction of TRAs. Secretary Frasco highlighted ongoing coordination with regional offices to ensure that hotels, resorts, and other accommodations meet global standards. The department conducts random inspections of accredited tourist enterprises to maintain quality and service excellence.

The establishment of these TRAs is a testament to the Philippine government’s commitment to improving its tourism infrastructure and providing a more comfortable and enjoyable travel experience for visitors.
