Negros Occidental Police Commits to Safeguarding May 12 Elections Amid Volcanic Threats

·

In a resolute commitment to public safety, the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office (NOCPPO) has pledged to prioritize security for the upcoming national and local elections on May 12, despite the looming threat of an eruption from Mt. Kanlaon. This assurance was made by NOCPPO director Col. Rainerio De Chavez during a significant peace covenant signing ceremony at Camp Alfredo M. Montelibano in Bacolod City.

The ceremony, held on February 13, 2025, saw the participation of 13 out of 41 candidates vying for positions such as governor, vice governor, board member, and legislative district representatives. Notable signatories included Victorias City Mayor Javier Benitez for the third district, former assistant secretary Lea Delfinado for the fourth district, and re-electionist Rep. Emilio Bernardino Yulo for the fifth district. Other attendees included incumbent officials like Bago City Mayor Nicholas Yulo and Sagay City councilor Arthur Christopher Marañon.

Col. De Chavez emphasized the importance of the peace covenant as a symbol of collaboration among all stakeholders, aimed at preventing electoral violence and misconduct. He urged candidates and supporters to campaign with integrity, engage in constructive dialogue, and prioritize community well-being.

Ian Lee Ananoria, the provincial elections supervisor, highlighted the dual nature of elections as both a right and a responsibility. He stressed the importance of a fair, respectful, and peaceful electoral process, calling for collective effort to ensure the elections reflect the democratic values and unity of the community.

The commitment from NOCPPO and the collaborative spirit shown at the peace covenant signing underscore a united front in safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process in Negros Occidental, even in the face of natural challenges.
