Irish Embassy and DOJ Host Dance Workshop for Women in Philippine Prison

·

In a unique collaboration, the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Irish Embassy in the Philippines organized a dance workshop for female inmates at the Correctional Institution for Women in Mandaluyong City. The event, held on February 12, 2025, aimed to enhance the health and wellness of the participants through Irish dance and to introduce them to Irish culture, thereby fostering stronger ties between the Philippines and Ireland.

The workshop saw the participation of key figures such as Irish Ambassador Emma Hickey and Naomi McElroy, Head of Consular at the Embassy of Ireland in the Philippines. This initiative aligns with the Marcos administration’s efforts to improve human rights and support the reintegration of inmates into society.

Justice Undersecretary Margarita Gutierrez highlighted the workshop as a testament to the commitment to rehabilitation and second chances. Ambassador Hickey expressed her delight in being part of the event and praised the ongoing programs at the Correctional Institution for Women.

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla extended his gratitude to the Irish ambassador for organizing what he described as a ‘noble event’ for the ‘reforming sisters behind bars.’ He also expressed hope for future collaborations with Ireland.

The event received support from the Samahan ng mga Pilipina para sa Reporma at Kaunlaran (SPARK) Philippines Inc., a non-profit dedicated to promoting gender equality and the development of women and youth.
