Cebu City’s local government has embarked on a significant initiative to tackle the persistent odor problem at the Cebu City Jail in Barangay Kalunasan. On February 13, 2025, Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia officiated the groundbreaking of a PHP42-million wastewater treatment facility, aimed at improving sanitation for inmates and alleviating the discomfort of nearby residents. The mayor expressed optimism that the new facility would effectively manage the volume of wastewater and eliminate the odor that has plagued the area for over five years. The project, expected to be completed within 510 days, responds to long-standing complaints about the health and environmental hazards caused by the jail’s untreated wastewater. Chief Supt. Neil Avisado, head of the city jail, expressed gratitude for the project, highlighting its importance in enhancing the living conditions and health of the inmates. Additionally, the city government provided an ambulance to the jail for emergency health services, further demonstrating their commitment to the welfare of those within the facility.
