Senator Gatchalian Advocates for Robust Support System for OFWs Returning from Lebanon

·

Senator Sherwin Gatchalian has called on the Philippine government to ensure a comprehensive support system for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) returning from Lebanon. In a statement released on Wednesday, Gatchalian highlighted the necessity of providing safety, reintegration, and livelihood opportunities to these workers to facilitate their smooth transition back into society.

Gatchalian emphasized that the repatriation of OFWs from Lebanon is crucial for their safety and successful reintegration with their families and communities. He urged the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) to offer full support, particularly in addressing any medical and psychological issues faced by the returning workers. This includes specialized treatment for trauma, stress, and other health concerns.

The senator also stressed the importance of sustainable reintegration programs, which should include livelihood initiatives, job opportunities, and skills training. These programs are essential for helping repatriates regain stability and reintegrate into the workforce effectively.

Gatchalian acknowledged the immense sacrifices made by OFWs for their families and the nation, underscoring that it is the government’s duty to support them upon their return. The Philippine government is currently repatriating 131 OFWs and nine dependents from Lebanon due to ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region, as stated by Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac.

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has instructed government agencies to provide comprehensive assistance to returning OFWs, including financial aid, airport assistance, and reintegration support. The DMW’s National Reintegration Center for OFWs will offer livelihood assistance, skills training, and redeployment options to these workers.

A multi-agency team, comprising the Department of Foreign Affairs, DMW, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, Department of Health, Department of Social Welfare and Development, and Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, will work together to ensure a smooth reintegration process for the returning OFWs.
