In Legazpi City, the Department of Education’s (DepEd) literacy program, ‘Project 6B: Bawat Batang Bicolano Bihasang Bumasa at Bumilang,’ has significantly impacted over 16,000 students in the Bicol Region since its inception last year. Maria Cristina Borosa, acting chief of the Education Support Services Division at DepEd Bicol, highlighted the project’s success in boosting classroom engagement, decreasing absenteeism, and enhancing students’ hygiene habits. Borosa noted that the initiative particularly aids students needing extra support in reading, leading to marked improvements in their literacy and comprehension skills. The project, which will continue until 2028, has engaged over 10,700 volunteers, including teachers, professionals, and community members. Borosa expressed gratitude towards all volunteers for their dedication. The program collaborates with various national government agencies, NGOs, and other stakeholders to uplift the literacy levels among Bicol’s youth.
