Lawmakers Stand Firm on Government Aid Programs Amid Public Support

In a strong defense of the government’s social welfare initiatives, Filipino legislators have called for an end to the criticism of these programs, citing overwhelming public approval. The Department of Social Welfare and Development’s efforts, including the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), Ayuda sa Kapos ang Kita Program (AKAP), Walang Gutom Program (WGP), Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS), and Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD), have been lauded by a significant majority of Filipinos according to recent polls by Social Weather Stations (SWS) and Pulse Asia.

Senior Deputy Speaker Aurelio ‘Dong’ Gonzales Jr. emphasized the public’s support, stating that these programs have significantly improved the lives of many Filipinos. He highlighted the unprecedented level of acceptance these initiatives have received. Deputy Speaker David ‘Jay-Jay’ Suarez pointed out the House’s commitment to these programs, noting the successful inclusion of AKAP in the 2025 budget despite opposition from some quarters.

Majority Leader Manuel Jose ‘Mannix’ Dalipe stressed the importance of these programs in extending economic growth to marginalized communities, funded by taxpayers’ money. He argued that these initiatives play a crucial role in alleviating poverty among the less fortunate.

The SWS survey revealed that 90% of respondents found 4Ps helpful, with 88% expressing similar sentiments about TUPAD. Additionally, 81% acknowledged the positive impact of AKAP and WGP. Pulse Asia’s findings were equally positive, with 82% of respondents believing that 4Ps has enhanced the financial stability of lower-income families, and the same percentage appreciating TUPAD’s contribution to employment opportunities. AKAP was also credited by 81% for easing financial burdens. Both surveys were conducted from January 17 to 25.
