DOST’s PROPEL Initiative Aims to Boost Philippine Innovations on the Global Stage

·

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has rolled out the PROPEL program, a strategic initiative designed to elevate local innovations to international markets. Launched at Batangas State University, the program was introduced to stakeholders from Southern Luzon and the National Capital Region during a zonal conference on February 12, 2025.

PROPEL, which stands for ‘Accelerating Innovation in the Philippines, Propelling Innovation from the Philippines,’ aims to close the divide between scientific research and commercial success. The initiative brings together a diverse group of participants, including representatives from state universities, higher education institutions, regional innovation committees, business chambers, and private enterprises.

DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. emphasized that PROPEL represents a significant shift in strategy, focusing not only on developing technology solutions but also on ensuring these innovations reach end-users and make a tangible impact both locally and globally. He stated, ‘Science and technology driven innovation is the cornerstone of social and economic transformation… PROPEL is designed to accelerate this transformation by aligning our programs and services at the DOST with the needs of communities, businesses, and industries.’

Assistant Secretary Napoleon Juanillo Jr. highlighted the program’s goal of consolidating the department’s resources, services, and facilities to create a robust support system for technology-driven enterprises. He stressed that PROPEL is not just about commercialization but also about improving the livelihood, health, and well-being of families, communities, and individuals through innovative products.

The program targets science-based technologies that address key areas such as health and wellness, agriculture and food security, environmental sustainability, information and communication technology (ICT), and energy and transportation. Additionally, PROPEL supports innovators by providing opportunities to showcase their products at international exhibitions, aiming to attract global investors.

The DOST initially launched PROPEL in December 2024, with the first zonal conference held in Baguio City for stakeholders in northern Luzon last month.
