Bacolod Aims to Transform into a UNESCO-Recognized Creative Film Hub

·

Bacolod City is on a mission to establish itself as a creative city focused on film, according to Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez. This ambition was highlighted during a meeting with British Ambassador Laure Beaufils and British Council Country Director Lotus Postrado at the Bacolod City Government Center. The mayor expressed that both dignitaries have pledged their support for Bacolod’s journey towards becoming a UNESCO Creative City, a title that celebrates cities that prioritize creativity and cultural industries in their development strategies and engage internationally.

The UNESCO Creative Cities Network, established in 2004, now includes 350 cities globally and encourages collaboration among cities that view creativity as crucial for sustainable urban growth. During the visit, Frances Mae Llamas, head of the Department of Local Economic Development and Investment Promotions, showcased Bacolod’s efforts to evolve from its nickname, ‘The City of Smiles,’ into a vibrant center for creativity, innovation, and film.

Mayor Benitez emphasized the city’s commitment to nurturing creativity, innovation, and cultural progress. On the same day, a seminar titled ‘Exploring Creative Placemaking Praxis for Negros Occidental’ was held at the Provincial Capitol Social Hall, aligning with the national government’s focus on boosting creative industries.

The seminar saw participation from local artists, cultural practitioners, academics, and tourism stakeholders, facilitated by William Chamberlain of Creative Wick and British Council representatives. The event, hosted by the British Council in collaboration with various local and national organizations, aimed to promote sustainable development within the creative sector.
